We are delighted to announce the launch of NanoPure, a new research project coordinated by the Institute of GeoEnergy of FORTH, in collaboration with the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos” (NCSR Demokritos), the University of Ioannina, and industry partners ALPHABIO and DELVEC.
Innovative Technology for micro- and nano-plastic removal
The NanoPure project aims to develop an innovative technology for removing micro- and nanoplastics from the effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). The approach uses specially functionalised magnetic nanoparticles designed to selectively capture targeted plastic particles, enabling their subsequent removal from water using an external magnetic field. The project will evaluate the technology’s performance in removing micro- and nanoplastics at pilot scale, as well as its technical and practical feasibility for integration into existing wastewater treatment plants and its potential contribution to safer water reuse.
The project is funded under the “Ερευνώ – Καινοτομώ 2021–2027” programme, co-funded by the European Union through the Competitiveness Programme and by national public funds.
The project Kick-off meeting
The NanoPure project partners held their kick-off meeting on Friday, 16 October 2026, marking the start of their collaboration. The meeting focused on the project’s implementation plan, the partners’ respective responsibilities and the next steps to ensure effective coordination and delivery of the planned activities.
Through collaboration between the research community and industry, NanoPure aims to contribute to the development of innovative solutions for environmental protection, the advancement of the circular economy and the transition towards a more sustainable future.
