The new facilities of the Institute of Geoenergy of FORTH (Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas), located at the University Campus in Akrotiri, Chania, were visited on Tuesday, May 19, by the Deputy Minister of Development, responsible for Research and Innovation, Mr. Stavros Kalafatis.
The Deputy Minister was welcomed by the Director of the Institute of Geoenergy (FORTH/IG), Prof. Ioannis Yentekakis, the Rector of the Technical University of Crete, Prof. Michail Zervakis, as well as researchers, members of the Institute, and the Technical Services of FORTH.
In his statement, Mr. Kalafatis referred to the creation of a modern hub of innovation and knowledge, which substantially strengthens the research and development potential of Crete and highlights the island’s key role in the new era of the knowledge economy.
The Director of the Institute highlighted the strategic role of the Institute in petroleum research, the green energy transition, and environmental protection, as well as its broader mission to promote innovation and excellence in the energy sector.
It was also emphasized that cooperation between two of Greece’s leading research institutions, FORTH and the Technical University of Crete, will be further strengthened with the operation of the new Geoenergy facilities on campus. Finally, the prospects for growth in entrepreneurship and the valorization of research outputs for the benefit of society, innovation, and sustainable development were highlighted.
