The Institute of Geoenergy of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) is pleased to announce the launch of the BLUEQ Observatory and National Blue Carbon Network and to invite civil society organizations, public authorities, research and educational institutions, and other interested organizations to join.
The initiative was established within the framework of the European project **BLUEQ – **Applied Solutions for Monitoring Coastal Habitats and Quantifying Blue Carbon Storage: An Integrated Approach for Sustainable Ecosystem Management, co-funded by the European Union through the Interreg IPA ADRION 2021–2027 Programme. The project is coordinated by the University of the Aegean and brings together the Institute of Geoenergy of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), the Public Institution for Nature of Šibenik-Knin County (Croatia), the University of Palermo (Italy), AULEDA – Local Economic Development Agency (Albania), the Regional Education and Information Centre for Sustainable Development in South-East Europe (Bosnia and Herzegovina), and the Institute for Modern Technologies of Montenegro (Montenegro). In Greece, the project is supported by the Region of Crete and the European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC) Amphictyony as associated partners.

The BLUEQ Observatory and National Blue Carbon Network have been established to support a coordinated partnership for the monitoring, protection and sustainable management of blue carbon ecosystems in the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. At the heart of this initiative is Posidonia oceanica, one of the most important marine ecosystems in the Mediterranean, which plays a crucial role in supporting marine biodiversity and contributing to climate change mitigation and adaptation. The Observatory’s Digital Hub provides access to the project's main operational output: a GIS-based tool that translates Posidonia oceanica habitat maps into estimates of carbon storage, integrating scientific and technical data.
