Spyros Bellas, Researcher at the Institute of Geoenergy of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), took part in a discussion on the television channel KRITI TV with the Deputy Regional Governor for the Environment of Crete, Mr. Nikos Xylouris, regarding the seismic surveys for hydrocarbons currently underway in the offshore areas west and northwest of Crete.
Dr. Bellas also pointed out that, should an exploratory drilling operation be decided upon, an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) would be required, which involves public consultation and social consensus. Furthermore, within the framework of reducing the carbon footprint, the Geoenergy Institute of FORTH is preparing a proposal to the Region of Crete to identify areas suitable for the underground geological storage of carbon dioxide, which may result from hydrocarbon exploitation activities.
