Evaluation of Gas Generation Potential using Thermal Maturity Modelling; the Katakolo Case: a Probable Pathway to Energy Transition

Abstract: It is evident that the increased focus on energy transition, will prolong the demand for especially gaseous hydrocarbons (HCs). Three offshore wells in West-Katakolo (western Peloponnesus, Greece) have drilled both oil and gas zones, while onshore exploration wells have penetrated biogenic gas-saturated Plio-Pleistocene sands. The study assesses the gas generation potential of the local Plio-Pleistocene and Triassic using thermal maturity modelling, with limitations being addressed by running several case-scenarios. It supports the presence of both stratigraphic ages gas source kitchens and of trapped gas quantities within the area, demonstrating the importance of maturity modelling in HC exploration applied on the Katakolo Case, as potential gas source for the energy transition in western Greece.
