Acronym: NanoPure
Project ID: ΕΚΠΑΡ02-0019699
Funding: This project is funded under the "Ερευνώ - Καινοτομώ 2021–2027" Action of the Competitiveness Programme (NSRF 2021–2027), co-funded by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and by national public funds.
Duration: 10/09/2026 – 09/09/2029

Project summary: The NanoPure project is developing an innovative technology to remove micro- and nanoplastics from treated wastewater using specially functionalised magnetic nanoparticles. These nanoparticles are designed to selectively bind to specific types of plastics, allowing the resulting aggregates to be recovered from water using an external magnetic field. The NanoPure technology will first be developed and validated at the laboratory scale and subsequently tested in a pilot unit. The environmental and economic sustainability of the proposed technology will also be assessed, with the aim of enabling its future integration as an additional treatment stage in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), contributing to more effective and sustainable plastic pollution mitigation.
Coordinated by the Institute of GeoEnergy at the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), the project brings together three leading Greek research institutions — FORTH, the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos” (NCSR Demokritos), and the University of Ioannina — alongside two high-tech companies, AlphaBio and DELVEC. This research–industry collaboration combines scientific expertise with industrial capabilities in nanoparticle scale-up and pilot system development, supporting the progression of the NanoPure technology from laboratory research towards practical application.
