Foundation of Research and Technology - Hellas

Institute of GeoEnergy

The Institute of GeoEnergy - IG, as the Institute of Petroleum Research - IPR was recently renamed, was founded in January 2019 and is one of the newest Institutes of the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH). At a time of energy transition towards cleaner forms of energy production, the Institute of GeoEnergy

Oriented to studying and developing methods and techniques addressing the environmental impact of the energy resources’ exploitation. It also aims at the development of materials and energy reuse technologies and the elaboration of environmental impact studies and energy exploits risk assessment.

Oriented to the development of innovative technologies related to the reduction of the carbon footprint of the energy mixture using hydrogen, geothermal energy, green fuels (biogas, methanol, ethanol, ammonia) and the optimization of the energy systems structure and operation.

Oriented to the research, study and development of methods and techniques for exploring geological structures suitable for the generation and production of fossil organogenic energy resources, the development of innovative methods for their production and transport, the production of conventional fuels with minimal carbon footprint and the development of technologies for carbon dioxide capture and storage.

Innovating today for a sustainable tomorrow

Who We Are & What We Do

We're oriented to basic and applied research related to green energy, environment, and conventional fuels’ carbon footprint reduction.

Among the basic principles of the Institute are the excellence, the evolution, the possibility of developing innovative tools and products, the control of the scientific and documented correctness of its views, the quality and stability in energy supply, the environmental protection and responsibility, the continuous effort to improve the conditions of human life in society, in the most sustainable way. Its main scientific focus follows 3 directions:

Hydrogen-Brine-Calcite Geochemical Interactions During Underground Hydrogen Storage

Underground hydrogen storage in porous geologic formations is a promising strategy to support the hydrogen economy by enablinglarge-scale, seasonal energy storage. However, potential geochemical interactions between hydrogen and reservoir minerals, particularly calcite, remain poorly understood. This study uses a series of kinetic simulations to ...
