Dr. Vakalas Ioannis is a geologist who has worked in various fields, such as sedimentology, petroleum geology, hydrogeology, soil & rock mechanics, for over 20 years. He has worked as a sub-contractor for major energy companies in Greece such as Energean Oil and Gas, Repsol, Hellenic Petroleum Upstream, Hellenic Hydrocarbons, and Energy Resources Management Company. During his tenure, he has supervised several oil & gas exploration projects. He received a BSc from the Geological Department of Patras University and an MSc from the National Technical University of Athens. His Ph.D. thesis (Geology Department, Patra University) focused on the palaeogeographic evolution of submarine fans in Western Greece and the distribution of potential sandstone reservoir units.
He has over seven years of teaching experience as a lecturer and assistant professor in Sedimentology & Physical Geology, General Geology, Geological Mapping, and Analysis of Coastal Processes. He has taken part in and supervised various research programs in Marine and Petroleum Geology. His research interests currently focus on Basin and Reservoir Analysis, Structural Geology, Sedimentology, and Marine Geology.
From 2022 he holds an Assistant Professor position in the School of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens. He is also an external research associate with the Institute of Geoenergy of The Foundation for Research and Technology of Greece.
