The aim of this session is to present some of the main principles of geothermal systems: wherethe energy come from? What are the geological contexts favorable to the use of this energy? What are the different types of geothermal systems? The emphasis will be on systems that can be characterized by geophysical approaches.
ABSTRACT
The aim of this session is to present some of the main principles of geothermal systems: where does the energy come from? what are the geological contexts favorable to the use of this energy? what are the different types of geothermal systems? The emphasis will be on systems that can be characterized by geophysical approaches.
For these systems it will be necessary to see which methods are adapted to characterize the structures and the fluids in place. Several examples of High and Medium Enthalpy geothermal systems will be developed, in particular that of Soultz-Sous-Foret in the Rhine grabben in France. Emphasis will also be placed on the risks associated with this energy and the resulting societal acceptance. An example on the induced seismicity around the city of Strasbourg (Eastern France) will be presented to illustrate this crucial issue for the future development of geothermal projects worldwide.
Finally, the example of Milos island belonging to the Southern Aegean Volcanic Arc will be a good case study to show the complexity of a volcanic geothermal reservoir with the association of a deep high enthalpy system (1-2 km below sea level reaching 250-350°C) and a more superficial medium enthalpy system (100-175°C).
