Dr. Nikolaos Kostoglou is a Researcher Grade B’ (Associate Research Professor) at the Institute of GeoEnergy of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), based in Chania, Greece. He also maintains a strong research collaboration with the Technical University of Leoben (Austria), where he previously served for eight years as a Senior Postdoctoral Researcher and Group Leader in Porous Materials within Prof. Christian Mitterer’s research group.
He holds a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering and a Master’s degree with honors in Energy Technologies and Sustainable Design from the University of Cyprus. In 2017, he completed his PhD with distinction at the Technical University of Leoben, titled “Carbon-based nanoporous materials for hydrogen storage”, under the supervision of Prof. Christian Mitterer.
Dr. Kostoglou’s research focuses on the development and characterization of advanced functional materials and systems for green energy and environmental applications, including hydrogen storage, carbon capture and water purification. He has authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications in high-impact international journals, presented his work at 22 international conferences and contributed to EU- and industry-funded research projects. He is actively involved in the scientific community as an Editorial and Advisory Board Member and as a Guest Editor of international journals.

Dr. Evina Gontikaki is Associate Researcher (Researcher, grade B) at the Institute of GeoEnergy (IG) of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas. She studied Biology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, and received a M.Sc. in Oceanography from the University of Southampton – National Oceanography Centre, UK. She was then awarded a scholarship by the Marie Curie Early-Stage Training Network ECOSUMMER (FP6) to conduct her PhD in Biological Sciences at the University of Aberdeen, UK, and the Scottish Association for Marine Science, UK. Following her doctoral studies, she remained at the University of Aberdeen (2010-2017) as a Research Fellow funded by the Marine Alliance for Science and Technology Scotland (MASTS). In 2018, she returned to Greece holding an Individual Fellowship by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (HFRI) and joined the group of Prof. Nicolas Kalogerakis at the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering of the Technical University of Crete. She was appointed as Assistant Researcher at the Environment and Circular Economy Division of IG-FORTH in October 2021.

EG is interested in the structure and function of marine microbial communities, and their role in delivering vital ecosystem services, such as carbon and nutrient cycling, and in alleviating the adverse effects of anthropogenic pressures on marine ecosystems through the biodegradation of pollutants and climate mitigation (Blue Carbon). To that end, she is employing state-of-the-art techniques in biogeochemistry (stable isotope tracer experiments), molecular biology (amplicon sequencing, shotgun metagenomics) and microbiology. She is specialising in deep-sea ecosystems and, in recent years, has focused on the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the biodegradation of hydrocarbons by pelagic and benthic deep-sea microbial communities of the North Atlantic and the Eastern Mediterranean Sea.

On July 2020, Spyros appointed the position of Principal Researcher at the Institute of GeoEnergy (IG) [former Institute of Petroleum Research (IPR)] of the Foundation for Technology & Research -Hellas (FORTH), based on the Technical University Campus of Chania, Crete Island, Greece. Between October 2016 and June 2020, he held the position of Vice President (Upstream), Executive BoD, in the State Company Hellenic Hydrocarbons Resources Management S.A. (HHRM SA). Since 2011 he became a key player and team leader of the hydrocarbons Working Group (Ministry of Environment & Energy, Upstream: Hydrocarbons Directorate). He had been Member & Negotiator in various Evaluation Committees for Awarding Blocks for E&P Licensing (On- and Offshore), in Technical Advisory Cmtes., Member of, the Prinos Production Field Cmte., the South Kavala Underground Gas Storage Project Cmte., the Maritime Licensing Cmte. (MFA) and the Environmental Preservation Cmte. of Limin Keri (Zakynthos oil seeps & leakages), while he has initiated many SEIAs, in the framework required for future sustainable Exploration. He acts as the Oil & Gas Expert representative of Greece in the European Federation of Geologists (EFG).

Spyros was three times External Evaluator of the Greek Authority for the Evaluation of the Quality of the Higher Educational Institutes (HQA, evaluating Departments and Universities of Greece). He owns the “C. Ktenas” Prize for the Natural Sciences of the Greek Academy of Sciences (2000). He studied Geology at Patras University, Greece (1990) and holds his Ph.D. from the Freie Universtität Berlin, Germany (1997), studying bio-stratigraphy of deep-water foreland basin clastics and developing world-wide correlations (Eocene to Miocene age). DAAD and ERASMUS Scholar in Germany. Between March 1997 and 2002 he held the position of Scientific Assistant where he lectured at the Geoscience Dept. of FU-Berlin and carried out research. Between 2003 and 2010 he worked as senior geoscientist in QC at the Central Laboratory of Public Works, Geo-Engineering Dept. (Gen. Division for QC), Athens, while lecturing applied geology at various Universities: Free University of Berlin, Univ. of Aegean, Ioannina, Patras, Higher School of Pedagogical & Technological Education, Western Macedonia, Athens, Panteion, Piraeus. Spyros has many publications in peer reviewed journals, and has given numerous talks while promoting the energy independency of the country together with the request for sources diversification of the EU and the safe storage issue coupled with the environmental protection (i.e. AAPG, ICE, EAGE, GSG, NAPE).
